Basketball: New focus for Adam McSwain

SHOOTING HOOPS: Ballarat Miners player Adam McSwain shows new sponsor Wes Davidson how it’s done. Picture: Andrew KellyADAM McSwain only has to look at the back of his left hand to be reminded of how the 2009 South East Australian Basketball League season fell off the rails for himself and the Ballarat Miners.McSwain carries a sizeable scar on the hand, which he broke early in the season. The 23-year-old had five screws and a plate inserted, and that is where they remain. The injury resulted in McSwain being sidelined for two months. The fracture also effectively wrote off the season for the big forward.McSwain had taken his game to a new level in the previous two seasons and with a shortage of big man power on the Miners’ roster, the opportunity was there for him to stamp his influence on the SEABL.He returned after getting his hand right, but he was never able to reach the heights he had hoped to.”It just never got going,” McSwain said.He said as frustrating as that was, all he could do now was put it behind him and look forward to his next challenge under new Miners coach Guy Molloy. With the Miners still lacking height, McSwain has focused on building up his strength, and improving his ball-handling and potency as a shooter.McSwain, who has got his weight up to 97-98 kilograms, has tended to specialise in jump shots from just inside the three-point arc.”I’m looking at extending my shooting range,” he said.McSwain was on hand yesterday for Ballarat Basketball Club’s announcement of a new naming rights sponsor – Wes Davidson Real Estate.Club president Nick Grylewicz said basketball attracted thousands of visitors to Ballarat each year, which in turn had an economic impact of millions of dollars on the city’s economy. He said attracting the support of major businesses was an important ingredient in the promotion of the sport and the City of Ballarat.Wes Davidson said sport was an integral part of communities, with basketball involving many families at various levels.
