BRBA division one: Learmonth leaps into top four

A 26-SHOT victory has helped Learmonth jump inside the Ballarat Regional Bowls Association division one top four.Learmonth bounced back from its previous round loss to win three of the four rinks at home on Saturday.The 104-78 result has elevated Learmonth from fifth to fourth, but three Mick Casey said it was important his side consolidated on its victory against Ballarat East this weekend.Casey said the home side led the match for the entire afternoon.”At lunch time we were probably about 20 shots up across the board,” he said.”We had a good lead in Fred Lennecke’s rink. I think at one stage we were 17-0 up, we got off to a flying start in that rink.”Casey said his team was unlucky not to have taken all four rinks after Bill Shillito’s team held six shots before opposing skip Neil Jones’ draw shot to claim a 23-19 victory. The biggest success for Learmonth came from Andrew Donovan’s team, which won 26-17.”They got off to slow start, and they come back and won convincingly,” Casey said.AVENUE managed to take the points in its match, despite some resistance from Ballarat North.The Bacchus Marsh club was a 15-shot winner, but dropped two rinks on its way to the 101-86 victory.The four points North grabbed helped it move above Sebastopol into eight place.TWO big wins from Bob Frka and Bob Whitcher’s rinks helped Victoria prevail over Creswick.Frka won by 20 shots and Whitcher 15 as Victoria trimmed Avenue’s lead at the top of the ladder to 13 points.MT XAVIER made light work of Webbcona.The X-men claimed all four rinks away from home in the 40-shot win, which keeps them in third place on the ladder.CITY OVAL has kept Ballarat East at the foot of the ladder.City claimed three of the four rinks in the 15-shot win.LADDERAvenue 146 points, Victoria 133, Mt Xavier 124, Learmonth 108, City Oval 103, Creswick 95, Webbcona 78, Ballarat North 71, Sebastopol 69, Ballarat East 63.
