Picture: Jeremy BannisterTHERE have been plenty of serious backyard cricket battles in the Kinna household, but yesterday, for the first time, Darren Kinna united on-field with sons Chris and Dylan. The match is also likely to be the only time all three line up for Coronet City together with Darren, 44, who is planning to bow out from Ballarat Cricket Association club competition.”This is sort of something I always wanted to do,” Darren said before taking to the field against Darley at Ballarat Secondary College, Wendouree.”It’s a pity it’s only one game – I want to keep playing, but the body says no.”Father-son cricket matches are somewhat of a family tradition for the Kinnas.Chris, 25, said there was an old photograph of his dad, grandfather and uncle playing together at Victoria Park.It was a moment he wanted to emulate.Chris transferred to Coronet City from Brown Hill three years ago and gradually his family followed. The firsts wicketkeeper/batsman dropped to the fourths this season to play alongside his dad, who was making a cricket “comeback” from a back operation.Fourteen-year-old Dylan, a pace bowler, tasted senior cricket last summer when he also played in Coronet’s first premiership, an under-14 title, with younger brother Liam. But he had never played an official match with his dad and older brother until yesterday.Chris said it was a special family feat, especially right on Christmas. “It all feels sort of surreal,” he said.”I never thought I’d play a game with my dad and brother.”I’ve played in the firsts since I was 16 and this year played down in the fourths with dad, hopefully to also play a game with Dylan.”The trio warmed up on the eve of their club fourths game in a bout of backyard cricket.Darren, a batsman, said it was something his family did every couple of nights. There is still potential for three Kinnas to take to the field for Coronet City in future matches, with Liam still climbing club ranks in the under-14s.
